INVITED LECTURES

Justin Dix - Black Sea MAP

Special Topic: Geophysics for Cultural and Historical Heritage
Invited lecture: Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project – new discoveries in Bulgarian waters

The Anglo-Bulgarian Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project (Black Sea MAP) undertook extensive geophysical geotechnical surveying of the Bulgarian shelf covering an area of c. 2000 km2. This project sought to address key questions over palaeo-shelf landscapes, when and how the shelf was inundated and the relationship of these landscapes to the known archaeological record. In the process of these surveys, 65 shipwrecks were discovered, dating from the Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Byzantine Empires. Some of these sites are the best-preserved and most intact shipwrecks from their respective periods ever discovered. The talk will provide an overview of the work.
